Message from the IFK Board

Dear IFK family,

At this challenging time, where we are all faced with differing levels of adversity, it seems an appropriate
opportunity to pause and reflect – a moment to evaluate many areas of our lives and how we live them.

IMG_8246.jpg

During these unprecedented times, like all families, we shall be at some point, close to, or directly
impacted, by the tragic nature that surrounds the COVID pandemic. It is during these times that we can
draw on the spirit of our Kyokushin upbringing and apply Mas Oyma’s principles – not least of all, that
‘introspection begets wisdom’. We may also draw on the Kyokushin principles of ‘patience, endurance
and perseverance’.

Many IFK countries, have in their lifetime, experienced natural disasters and war – their spirit and resolve
has ensured their survival and enabled them to gather and rebuild. This epidemic is a very serious crisis
for us all, a ‘new’ normal will eventually ensue and we shall move forward. It is without doubt that our
life, including karate, will be shaped and influenced by these current times - we will need to adapt in order
to progress.

The IFK Board are standing firm with you all in this time of difficulty and we are trying to offer support,
wherever possible, to our Country Representatives, their instructors and students. Obviously national
and international events have been suspended but we are confident that eventually we will continue our
work in promoting Kyokushin Karate under the IFK banner.

We thank you all for your continued support and hard work at many levels – take care and be safe.

3rd KWU World Tournament, held in Ekaterinburg, Russia

WHAT A SHOW!

As the IFK reflect on the success of the 3rd KWU World Championships in Ekaterinburg we can only marvel at the work of the organisers.

This event has set the bar as to where we would aim to be if we achieved Olympic status and it shows we are more than capable of doing it. The opening ceremony was an extravaganza of colour and sound that brought the stadium to life and we thank both the organisers and the creative directors for their vision.

This 3rd edition of the championships showed the KWU is learning from their mistakes in the past.  Competitor check-in procedures were slicker, judging seminars focused on the main issues and as in so many events we didn't witness lots of long speeches by the dignitaries. The athletes were the stars and they rightly took centre stage.

242 competitors from 48 countries meant the majority of the weight categories had solid participation.

Of course the KWU could achieve much higher numbers by allowing more than one participant from a country in each division but this would defeat their aim. We all hold our own championships with our own rules, weights and participation levels. This must be different, the five kilogram categories are suitable for an Olympic programme and as with the other combat sports we follow the example of one athlete per country.

It is interesting to note that for Karate in the 2020 Olympics it is scheduled for each of the six weight categories to have a maximum of 10 athletes only. At the KWU Championships thirteen of fifteen categories achieved more than that number.

Focusing on the performance of the IFK once again we must be proud to have played a major role in its success. We had 52 fighters from 17 countries and topped the medal table with 6 different countries achieving prizes.

Of course our major contributor was the top team in the championships Russia, but we also gained medals from Great Britain, Ireland, Iran, Belarus and an amazing gold from Greece!

5th IFK World Knockdown Tournament - Official results

IFK Australia Clicker Championship 2017 - Results

Once again, we had a great tournament on Sunday 26th Feb, with over 70 competitors.  Congratulations to everyone who took part, and of course in particular to all those who placed. Someone has to win; that's what competition is all about.

A big well done also to all the officials. For some of them it was the first time "live" and they all performed very well. Still, there's always room for improvement, as with anything in life, and we will always strive towards that. Thanks also to the volunteers who handled the score keeping.

A big thank you to all the parents who supported the event by making the effort to be there while their children learn to compete, to deal with winning and losing, sportsmanship, teamwork, and camaraderie.

Needless to say, we also thank all those who helped set up the day before and pack up after the tournament. These are important components of any tournament, and we always welcome people who volunteer to help (as we all do) with  all the logistical aspects of our events.  Let us know if you'd like to help with the next one.

The next tournament for IFKKA is Full Contact - from 11 yrs/ 8th kyu and up, 26th June.

Award ceremony of the 5th KWUCHAMP 2016 – pictures

The 5th KWU Kyokushin Open World Youth Championship took place in Varna, Bulgaria on December 3-4, in beautiful Palace of Culture and Sport.

666 fighters from 33 countries fought for 32 sets of medals in 3 age groups – 12-13, 14-15 and 16-17 years old.  The tournament's level of fighting, as compared to the previous Youth World Championship, has grown considerably. The girls and boys who won the right to hear the anthem of their country are a real strong future of Kyokushin karate.

Here are the pictures from winners ceremony, good emotions and happy faces, captured on photos by Andrey Kurtiy from superkarate.ru

Karate into the Olympics, and how it affects the KWU

The following is an extract of an article from KWU General Secretary, Sergey Suvorov, commenting on the inclusion of karate into the 2020 Olympics, discusses the prospect of KWU in this process.

Everyone knows that World Karate Federation WKF was repeatedly storming Olympic leadership for inclusion of karate in the programme of the Olympic Games and now, finally, the dream of the millions of karatekas all over the world came true and this kind of sports will be represented at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 year. I’d like to note immediately that this refers now only to the participation in Tokyo Olympics. There 4 more such sports as karate. This is the novation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and it deals with the reformatory strategy of the new IOC leadership and personally with the president Tomas Bach. Indeed, according to the Olympic Charter (in essence the charter of IOC) rotation of sports for every Olympics follows the principle one in – one out (one enters and another one exits the programme of the Olympic Games). However, the Olympic Session as the supreme authority has the right to solve any questions, which deal with development of Olympic movement, which was decided after the Olympic Games in Sochi-2014.  Therefore, for participation in the programme of Games 2024 WKF will have to go through the difficult voting procedure again under the condition that the country-holder of the Olympic Games will nominate this kind of sports.

IFK Australia Summer Camp 2016

IFK – Australia Summer Camp Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th January 2016

We had a great time at the recent IFK-Australia Summer Camp with Shihan David Pickthall from the UK taking 3 days of great karate. Covering areas of Kihon, Kata and Kumite, with around 60 people attending the camp over the 3 days.

What a treat to train with such a talented and inspirational Karateka such as Shihan David Pickthall. Again the highlight of the camp was the beach session on the Sunday morning we all had a lot of fun.

Again it is great to see other Kyokushin Organisations supporting this event, thank you to Sensei Daniel Trifu from (KWF) AFK, Sensei Graeme Rose “Rengokai”, Sensei Daniel Langworthy and Shihan Trevor Trainer and for bringing along your students. As we are all working towards a United Kyokushin! Osu and thank you for your support.
